Re: Front Brake Rebuild

I'm a believer in having a plan A and a plan B (at the minimum) so I ordered one of those generic replacement master cylinders. It's a 14mm unit, but given that my bike has a single disk I figured it would work. I still have the original master cylinder and the rebuild kit, and have not given up on ...

O-ring goes in the housing. Lube it with some brake fluid before seating this reservoir.

Ah, good. That's how I did it, and how I will do it again when I have a healthy O-ring. Thank you sir.

Re: Front Brake Rebuild

It's basically a siphon feed sand blaster gun, but instead of sand, I'm using baking soda. Cleans things up nicely, but it's less abrasive. Just looked them up... too much expense for me to justify buying one just for this purpose. Another question (tired of me yet?): When reinstalling the reservoi...

Re: Front Brake Rebuild

I have a soda blaster that I will usually use on the circlip area before I try to remove it. It really cleans up the rust and allows you to see a much better. Soda blaster... hmm. Not familiar with that one, but it sounds brilliant. You say it's not working, what is the master cylinder doing now? D...

Re: Front Brake Rebuild

So, an update. This morning I tried to do the rebuild. I had some difficulty getting the brake fluid out of the system, but eventually succeeded; next, I pulled the lever and mirror, unhooked the wires, and removed the unit from the bike. According to the service manual, removal of the piston assemb...

Re: My "new" 1980 CB650

The headlight did not come with bolts; I had to find my own. I can't find my notes from where I got them, but I seem to recall they were M10-1.25 or something like that. The hard thing to find were the spacers, and I've given a link to them above. As to how I'm getting along with it... I'll be hones...

Re: My "new" 1980 CB650

POSTING DATE: 5/8/16 Several nickel-and-dime issues, such as a broken tachometer cable (the tach end rusted off; it was loose when I got the bike, and evidently got wet). I got a replacement on Amazon.com, of all places. I ordered new keys from http://www.keys4urride.com, and I have to say I was qu...

Re: Front Brake Rebuild

I'm going to be taking it apart anyway, so I suppose I should get a rebuild kit, right? How do you feel about the K&L kit, 32-1464? They claim it's all OEM parts required to rebuild the master cylinder, and it does look complete (comparing to the fiche, of course). For the record, I got the bike...

Re: Front Brake Rebuild

And this is why I ask for help.

:D

Still, a question... If I'm going to have to empty the master cylinder anyway, should I completely replace the brake fluid? It's 37 years old, after all. If so, what do you recommend?

Front Brake Rebuild

My 1980 CB650 is suffering from some dragging, not serious but noticeable. I hate to take it all apart and then be without my ride, especially at the beginning of the season, so I've worked out a plan. I'm going to start by buying another front caliper, on Ebay of course. Or is it eBay? Whatever. I'...

Re: New tires / tyres

Was revisiting this thread while putting together a blog post, and just thought I'd post an update. The Bridgestone Battlax tires I put on have served me well for about 2,000 miles so far; I'm not the sort of rider to really stress his tires, but they seem to be working and wearing quite well.

Re: New tires / tyres

Okay, so for anyone who cares... the 130/80-17 Battlax fits my 1980 CB650 standard very nicely indeed. Got both tires on last night. When I balanced them, I was surprised that it took just one 10g weight for the front wheel, and I couldn't find a heavy spot on the rear at all. Considering the amount...

Re: New tires / tyres

I guess I should also mention that Kenda has the Retroactive tube-type tires in 120/90B-18 and 130/80B-18 sizes (as rear tires). Was it me doing it, and I wanted the "wider" look, I'd go with that latter tire.

Re: New tires / tyres

Ah, I see. But I wasn't steering, I was (I guess) hijacking. I needed tires too, and was jumping on the bandwagon. Did not realize the situation. Again, sorry. In my defense, the OP has not replied since starting the thread, and reviewing the first post I see he left out the width of his desired rea...
